The seeds of the downfall were embedded into the EU mechanism right from the get go. However, the EU might fall for entirely different reasons and much sooner than many would think.

The only way to avoid collapse is fundamental reform beyond recognition. Which would be the equivalent of a collapse anyway since all the EU can keep is the flag and some of its buildings. Everything else would need to be reformed, abolished or even bulldozed.
